Basic Schools Reopen Today - GES

Today, Basic Schools Reopen For Term 2 Across Ghana. The Ghana Education Service has confirmed that today, 8th January, 2026, all basic schools will reopen for the second term of the 2025-2026 academic year. Ahead of the reopening, a cross section of teachers, parents, and other stakeholders in education advocated strongly for the postponement of the reopening date from 8th January to 13th January due to the public holiday declared by the government through the Ministry of Interior.

However, the GES remained grounded in its belief that the official calendar for 2025-2026 will not be altered. What the 8th January reopening means is that schools will break on the same reopening day to observe the Constitution Day holiday, which was moved from 7th January to 9th January per the law on public holidays passed by the government of Ghana.

The Public Holidays Act, 2001 (Act 601), Section 2—states as follows:

(1) Where a day specified in the Schedule falls on a non-working day, the President may by executive instrument declare the next following working day or any other day to be a public holiday.

The above is the reason why the government moved the holiday from the 7th to the 9th of January, 2026. Due to this holiday, most parents would be reluctant to allow their children to report to school today, 8th January. Per the culture of most Ghanaian schools and schoolchildren and the mindset of parents, the HeadlineX can confirm that while schools will reopen today, many learners will stay home and extend their vacation by one extra day, followed by the January 9th holiday, and report officially on Monday, 13th January, 2026.

Basic Schools Reopen For Term 2 Today But Many Will Stay Home

Ghana does not have strict punitive rules and corrective mechanisms for students who fail to report to school on the reopening dates; hence, whether students report or not, schools cannot “punish” learners for absenting themselves.

However, should students report to school today, 8th January, in their numbers instead of Monday, 13th January, they would be able to do a lot of groundwork and cleaning, which will lessen their challenges and work on Monday. This will also move the schools into full teaching and learning mode. This is the key reason why the Ghana Education Service refused to alter the academic calendars for both basic schools and secondary schools. As basic schools reopen for term 2 today, teachers and school managers will be at work to welcome their learners from the Christmas and New Year break.
